Providers know they need to

conduct supervision.

But how many have the skills to hold effective supervision conversations?

Why managers need coaching skills, not more paperwork.

Less paperwork. Better conversations. Greater impact.

A three-hour interactive session for owners, managers and room leaders in early years and school-age childcare settings, and for childminders who employ staff.

Supervision is not a tick-box compliance activity.

It needs to be lived and breathed in every setting.

Effective supervision is a leadership skill.

Supervision contributes directly to leadership and governance judgements.

Does this sound like your providers?

We don’t have time for supervision

We don’t do supervision, but I am always available if the team need me

I have got forms (but can’t tell you what the actions are)

My staff don’t or won’t do what I want them to

We do appraisals / team meetings / I send emails - isn’t that supervision?

I’d like to get better at supervision

I know I need to connect supervision with impact - how do I do that?

Providers care passionately about inspection outcomes.

Without effective supervision, providers risk not achieving the expected standard.

Better supervision improves practice, strengthens teams, supports retention and ultimately results in better outcomes for children.

“It's like I go into a mentoring session in chaos and come out with

clarity, vision, purpose and direction.

She helps me make informed decisions and empowers me to take

action with confidence.”

SM, Founder, Alternative Provision

Providers know supervision is required…

…but have not been taught how to supervise through coaching.

Do you find settings can show you the forms, but not evidence what they actually changed?

A provider can have excellent paperwork and still struggle to

demonstrate effective supervision.

Supervision and Coaching: all the impact, no extra paperwork.

  • After the session, delegates will be able to...

Explain what supervision is for, in terms their own team will recognise, and separate it from appraisal

Hold a coaching conversation using a structure they can remember and use the same week

Answer the objections they hear from their staff, and the ones they have used themselves

Trace a conversation through to something a child experiences

Provide evidence to Ofsted without generating more paperwork

  • How It Impacts Inspection

Supervision sits at paragraphs 3.35 and 3.36 of the EYFS statutory framework. An evaluation area is graded at the expected standard only where the relevant EYFS requirements are met, and supervision is one of them.

Ofsted does not want documents produced for inspection, and has stated that doing so creates unnecessary workload. Most settings are doing more paperwork than it asks for, and less of the conversation.

Inspectors are looking for manageable workloads, whether staff feel supported, and whether professional learning is targeted at improving practice.

This session gives providers the conversation that produces all three, and a way to evidence supervision that is not another form.
